The elections for the Council of State in the Ashanti Region were marred by disorder when a group of unidentified individuals invaded the election center, interrupting the sorting and counting of ballots.
Witnesses indicated that the intruders forcefully breached the venue, overturning tables, damaging ballot boxes, and scattering voting materials, which led Electoral Commission (EC) officials to halt the electoral process.
The unrest is thought to have been incited by the surprising defeat of Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, who was widely regarded as a leading contender.
Supporters, reportedly dissatisfied with the results, are said to have provoked the violence, calling for a reevaluation of the election outcomes.
Security personnel present at the scene faced challenges in managing the escalating situation, resulting in a temporary suspension of the election activities.
In response, additional law enforcement officers have been dispatched to restore order and protect electoral materials.
At this time, the Electoral Commission has not issued an official statement regarding the disruption or the subsequent steps concerning the election results.
