The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally announced its leadership framework for the 9th Parliament, indicating the party’s approach to overseeing legislative matters in the forthcoming session.
The newly designated leadership team comprises:
- Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
- Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader.
- Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip.
- Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip.
- Davies Opoku as Second Deputy Minority Whip.
In light of these leadership appointments, the NPP plans to hold a meeting with its elected Members of Parliament to inform them of their duties and responsibilities in anticipation of the official commencement of the 9th Parliament.
This selection of leadership underscores the NPP’s dedication to fostering unity and ensuring effective management within Parliament, even as the party adjusts to a transformed political environment.
The new leadership of the NPP is confronted with challenges following a notable electoral defeat in the 2024 general elections.
The party experienced a loss of more than 50 seats, achieving only 81 seats in the 9th Parliament, a significant reduction from the 137 seats it previously held in the 8th Parliament. In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged as the leading party, obtaining over 180 seats and thus establishing itself as the majority in the 9th Parliament.
As the NPP adapts to this shift in power dynamics, its leadership will be instrumental in managing opposition tactics and shaping legislative priorities in the new Parliament.
