The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to endorse the anti-gay bill prior to the conclusion of his term in office.
During the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s (PCG) Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Osu Castle, Rt. Rev Dr. Opare Kwakye highlighted the importance of the bill, encouraging the President to enhance his legacy through its approval.
“The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which we Presbyterians have supported since its inception under my predecessor’s leadership, is interpreted by us as a celebratory gift for this year.
“Your Excellency, fulfill our hopes; we are optimistic that in these final days, you will complete our joy by signing the bill into law in Ghana.
“We aim to uphold the values of the African community through the gospel, and we trust that you will act accordingly.”
Dr. Kwakye’s statements come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s unanimous rejection of two petitions questioning the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-gay bill.
On December 18, the Court dismissed separate challenges presented by broadcast journalist and attorney Richard Dela Sky and Amanda Odoi.
The bill, which Parliament passed on February 28, 2024, has sparked significant national discourse. Proponents argue that it safeguards traditional family values, while opponents contend that it violates human rights.
Despite the Court’s dismissal of the petitions, the bill’s future remains uncertain, as President Akufo-Addo previously indicated that he was awaiting resolutions to all outstanding legal matters.
