The Railway Workers Union has issued a warning to cease all operations starting Tuesday, May 13, 2025, unless the Ghana Railway Company Limited settles the overdue salaries of more than 900 employees.
The workers have reported going unpaid for the last seven months, resulting in significant financial hardship and an urgent call for action.
The union asserts that the state-owned enterprise has encountered ongoing difficulties since the governmental transition, exacerbating its financial predicament.
In an interview, Franklin Cobbinah, the Branch Secretary of the Accra division, characterized the situation as critical and urged for immediate government assistance.
He stated, ‘We have not received our salaries for the past seven months. Whenever we inquire, no one is willing to provide information.
We have attempted to pacify the workers, but we can no longer manage their frustrations. Therefore, we, as employees, are demanding our seven months’ salary from management.’
The proposed strike is anticipated to disrupt passenger services between Tema and Accra, impacting thousands of daily commuters.
