A prospective National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has articulated that his motivation for re-entering the leadership race is centered on a singular goal: to assist the party in regaining political power and to see Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ascend to the presidency.
In discussions with party supporters in the Volta, Oti, and Central Regions, the former National Chairman emphasized that his return from retirement is not driven by personal ambitions, but rather by his conviction that the NPP has a distinct opportunity to rejuvenate and reclaim governance.
“I did not return from retirement for any reason other than to attain power. Power is our primary objective, enabling us to develop our nation in accordance with our vision,” he remarked.
Mr. Afoko asserted that the foundational principles and political philosophy of the NPP represent the optimal route for Ghana’s advancement, underscoring the necessity for the party to mend its internal rifts before it can persuade the electorate to reinstate it in office.
He cautioned that the party’s diminishing presence in Parliament should act as a clarion call for its members, particularly the veteran members who have dedicated their lives to the party.
“If we remain passive, especially you, the elders, if you choose to sit idly by and observe, the party you have labored for since your youth is on a downward trajectory,” he warned.
Pointing to the NPP’s diminished representation in Parliament, Mr. Afoko highlighted that the party’s seats have plummeted from 169 to 87, labeling this decline as a clear signal that immediate action is imperative.
“We have fallen to 87 from 169. It is essential for all of us to rise and declare that this party must change its course and ascend,” he urged.
The chairman hopeful contends that unity is the essential element for the NPP’s resurgence and ultimate return to power. He appealed to members at all levels of the party to set aside their differences and collaborate to reconstruct a more robust and formidable political entity.
Awentami Paul Afoko’s 3Rs Campaign is founded on a straightforward principle: Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture power. He contends that the NPP cannot achieve victory in 2028 if it remains divided. The initial step is to unite all factions and reintegrate discontented members into a single family.
After achieving unity within the party, he suggests that the emphasis should shift towards reconstructing robust grassroots structures, extending from the polling station to the national level, thereby empowering the base once more.
With unity established and strong structures in place, the final R becomes attainable, which is to recapture power from the opposition and restore the NPP to governance.
