The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, commonly referred to as Mahama Cares, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has made it clear that the Fund does not offer financial assistance for patients seeking medical care outside of Ghana.
During her address at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, she noted that the Fund has faced mounting pressure recently, with individuals tagging the organization in social media posts requesting funding for treatment abroad.
She elaborated that the legislation that created the Fund limits its scope to providing free treatment for non-communicable diseases within Ghana.
She emphasized that this policy is also intended to promote cost efficiency, contending that the funds allocated for overseas treatment could instead benefit a significantly larger number of patients locally.
“We consistently receive requests for funding to travel abroad for treatment. I want to make it clear right now, we do not provide any funding for treatment outside the borders of this country.
“The amount we would spend for one patient to receive treatment in India could instead be utilized to assist approximately 20 patients within the country. Anything outside the borders, as outlined in the Act, is beyond our jurisdiction,” she stated.
