The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has disclosed that the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, was engaged in advanced discussions to rejoin the party prior to her passing on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Nana Konadu, the spouse of the NDC’s founder and former President Jerry John Rawlings, played a pivotal role in the early development of the party and was instrumental in promoting women’s empowerment through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
Following her defeat in the NDC’s presidential primary in 2011, she departed from the party to establish the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012. Although she faced disqualification from that year’s general election, she subsequently ran in 2016 under the NDP’s banner.
After leading an NDC delegation to her home on Monday, October 27, Fifi Kwetey revealed that efforts to reconcile with Nana Konadu were approaching fruition before her demise.
“I wouldn’t characterize the discussions as unsuccessful. Instead, I would say that the timing posed a challenge. Because even from her perspective, it was evident that she was prepared,” he stated.
Mr. Kwetey emphasized that the party had long acknowledged her significant contributions to its establishment and development, and had been striving to repair its strained relationship in recent years.
“We have consistently maintained that given her role in founding this party and contributing to its strength and greatness—despite the challenges encountered along the way—we needed to move past those issues. I am pleased that during her lifetime, these efforts commenced and she welcomed them,” he elaborated.
He characterized Nana Konadu as a monumental figure whose legacy of bravery, leadership, and advocacy for women will continue to inspire future generations both within and outside the NDC.
“The party will profoundly miss her,” he concluded.
