Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed allegations that his religion and ethnicity contributed to the party’s defeat in the recent general election.
He stated that an analysis of the data indicates that, despite being a Muslim candidate, he surpassed the performance of the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates even in constituencies predominantly inhabited by Christians.
During a gathering with party supporters at the headquarters, Dr. Bawumia elaborated that his examination of the election data, along with findings from other research, suggests that such claims are merely propaganda.
He noted, ‘In the primaries, there were ten candidates: one Muslim and nine Christians, yet the NPP chose the Muslim candidate for president. This contradicts the notion that religion was a factor. I conducted a data analysis to evaluate this hypothesis.
The results are unequivocal; in numerous constituencies nationwide, the NPP presidential candidate outperformed the Christian parliamentary candidates. Therefore, if voting was influenced by religion, I would not have achieved better results than the Christian candidates.’
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia expressed his approval of Prof. Mike Ocquaye’s report, indicating that certain elements of the party, including the delegate system for leadership elections, will be revised in accordance with the review committee’s recommendations.
