MTN Ghana has stated that it will await the government’s decision regarding its possible involvement in the Next Gen Infraco (NGIC) consortium, which is leading the nationwide deployment of the 5G network.
The rollout of 5G is already in progress in major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, with plans to expand coverage across the country within the next two years.
At present, AT Ghana Limited has joined NGIC’s open-access platform, while Telecel Ghana is reportedly nearing the conclusion of negotiations. MTN’s participation remains uncertain, leading to speculation within the telecommunications sector.
During his first anniversary as CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett mentioned that the company is looking for guidance from the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel George.
“We have engaged with NGIC and discussed the situation. Regardless of how the 5G rollout progresses, MTN will participate in some form—whether through NGIC, a hybrid model, or alternative methods. We are willing to be part of the rollout and collaborate as partners. For now, we will await direction from the minister,” Blewett stated.
Furthermore, Blewett reassured the public regarding concerns about the transition to 5G, highlighting MTN Ghana’s dedication to ensuring a seamless and effective implementation of the new network technology.
