The Minority in Parliament has formally requested the Speaker to take immediate action to uphold constitutional provisions and parliamentary protocols following an attempted arrest of Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South.
This incident, which took place on Wednesday, has sparked significant concerns regarding the dynamics between security agencies and elected officials.
The Minority contends that the attempt by agents from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to apprehend the MP at his residence in Spintex was executed without adherence to the established procedures that govern interactions with sitting Members of Parliament.
Frank Annoh Dompreh, the Chief Whip of the Minority, articulated these concerns in an official memorandum addressed to the Speaker.
The memorandum underscored the necessity of honoring parliamentary privileges and cautioned that neglecting this principle could jeopardize the authority and autonomy of the legislature.
The attempted arrest is reportedly associated with ongoing investigations into alleged drug trafficking and money laundering linked to two international flights that transited through Ghana in March 2025.
While the specifics of Reverend Fordjour’s purported involvement remain ambiguous, the Minority maintains that any investigations must adhere to due process.
In their correspondence to the Speaker, the Minority reaffirmed their dedication to the rule of law, emphasizing that all engagements between MPs and security forces must comply with constitutional protections and established parliamentary practices.
They urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to exercise his authority to prevent any future incidents that they characterize as violations of parliamentary integrity.
