The Minister responsible for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama is fully aware of his duties and that a formal appointment for the Ministry of Defence will be announced in due time.
Following the helicopter crash on August 6 that resulted in the death of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Ministry of Defence has been temporarily led by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who has taken on the role of acting Defence Minister.
The extended vacancy has led to calls from various individuals, including former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul, for a formal appointment to tackle the emerging security issues facing the nation.
Nitiwul has voiced his concerns regarding the delay, emphasizing that the rising threats of terrorism and insecurity throughout the West African region necessitate strong and decisive leadership at Ghana’s Defence Ministry.
He has urged President Mahama to take prompt action, whether by promoting the current deputy minister or appointing a new candidate, to guarantee continuity and stability within the nation’s defence administration.
In an interview conducted on Monday, October 27, Kwakye Ofosu addressed the concerns regarding the challenges in appointing a successor, reiterating the commitment of President Mahama’s administration to fill the leadership void and highlighting that the process will ensure the Defence Ministry functions effectively and aligns with national security objectives.
He remarked, “President Mahama fully comprehends his responsibilities, and while he shared a close bond with the late Minister Omane Boamah, the president is pragmatic and professional enough to recognize that life continues.
“Any necessary actions will be taken to guarantee that the Defence Ministry is led by the best individuals and that the policies they implement contribute to the overall progress of our nation and safeguard our safety and security. An announcement regarding this will be made in due time.
