President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to initiate two significant projects: the Catholic Science and Technology University and a regional hospital in Damongo, located in the Savannah Region.
The President made this announcement during a courtesy visit from the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, at the Presidential office.
As stated by President Mahama, the initial funding for the proposed university will be sourced from the $30 million grant pledged by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
He further explained that the regional hospital will also function as a teaching facility for the Catholic Science and Technology University, which will include a Faculty of Medical Sciences aimed at training medical doctors and other allied health professionals.
During the discussion, the President reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
Archbishop Naameh, who suggested both the name and location of the university, raised several educational and social concerns affecting the northern region and earnestly appealed for solutions.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to the President Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President, and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
