President John Dramani Mahama has revealed intentions to conduct a national referendum regarding proposed constitutional amendments in conjunction with the 2027 District Assembly Elections.
He made this announcement during his address at the Resetting Ghana Tour Citizens’ Engagement in Bolgatanga, which is part of his two-day visit to the Upper East Region.
“Thus, we aim to incorporate the referendum into the District Assembly elections next year. In addition to voting for your Assembly Members, you will also be asked to vote on the constitutional amendments,” President Mahama stated.
“Should the referendum succeed, we will proceed with the implementation of the amendments to the entrenched clauses. This is our approach concerning governance.”
President Mahama indicated that he would soon establish the Constitutional Review Implementation Committee, which will merge the Government’s position paper with the reports from the Constitutional Review Commission.
He explained that the Committee would categorize the proposals into non-entrenched and entrenched clauses.
“For non-entrenched clauses, only Parliamentary approval is necessary. We will present them to Parliament, where Members will vote and approve them,” he noted.
“Entrenched clauses, however, necessitate a referendum. A minimum of 40 percent of registered voters must participate, and 75 percent of those who vote must approve the amendments.”
The President reiterated that the referendum would be included in the District Assembly elections next year.
In response to two requests from the Paramount Chief of Kologo Traditional Area, Naba Clifford Abagna Tandegrewongrekugre Asobayire V, regarding the construction of a road and the establishment of a Senior High School in his area, President Mahama instructed the Minister of Roads and Highways to ensure the road’s construction.
He also directed the Minister of Education to facilitate the establishment of a Senior High School in the Kologo Traditional Area.
