Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has called upon the party’s Minority Caucus in Parliament to spearhead efforts aimed at restoring the NPP to electoral success.
During a private meeting with the Members of Parliament, Afoko introduced a new political initiative known as the ‘3R Agenda,’ which emphasizes Reuniting, Rebuilding, and Recapturing power for the party.
He characterized this initiative as a strategic plan designed to restore unity, enhance grassroots support, and prepare the NPP for future electoral victories.
“For many years, I opted to work quietly behind the scenes, providing support to the NPP in a private capacity,” Afoko remarked. “However, recent events have necessitated my public involvement. It is imperative that we return our party to a winning trajectory, which begins with unity and a shared purpose.” Afoko emphasized the pivotal role of the Minority MPs, both as legislators and as figures of unity within the party.
He cautioned that without a unified effort to foster internal cohesion, the aspiration of regaining power would remain elusive. Reflecting on his time as National Chairman, Afoko pointed to the NPP’s 2014 presidential primaries as an exemplar of internal discipline and unity.
“We held primaries where every candidate accepted the results, and no one chose to run independently,” he stated. “Individuals like Sammy Awuku can vouch for the level of organization and trust we experienced during that period.” He acknowledged that the party’s electoral support has diminished over the years, especially during times in government when internal competition for positions tends to create divisions.
“Historically, even while in opposition, the NPP has consistently outperformed the NDC in terms of vote percentages,” Afoko noted. “This indicates that our base is robust, yet it has weakened. The pressing question is: how do we reclaim it?” According to Afoko, the solution is encapsulated in the 3R Agenda: Reunite; mend internal rifts and rebuild trust among factions. Rebuild; fortify party structures from the grassroots to the national level, and Recapture; re-engage the base and offer a credible, united front to Ghanaians.
Afoko urged party members to unite in support of the vision, referencing his history of achievements as proof of his capability to produce results. “My record is self-evident. I am focused on outcomes, and with the united backing of the party, we can accomplish this,” he stated.
He finished by encouraging the NPP to transcend internal conflicts and concentrate on the larger objective: regaining the confidence of Ghanaians and returning to power to facilitate development.
