Samuel Twumasi, a 37-year-old driver, was overcome with emotion and broke down in tears after the Accra Circuit Court acquitted him of conspiracy and two charges of defrauding by false pretenses.
During the court session, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the lead prosecutor, informed the court that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with the case against Twumasi.
In light of this information, the presiding judge, Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered Twumasi’s release.
As he exited the dock, Twumasi wept uncontrollably. Despite attempts by several police officers to comfort him, advising him that “Barima nsu” (which translates to “Men don’t cry”), he was unable to contain his tears.
His emotional response was partly due to the fact that he had been in police custody and unable to fulfill the bail conditions imposed by the court.
Twumasi had been on trial alongside Isaac Danso, a 38-year-old communication consultant, who faced the same allegations. However, Danso was absent from court at the time of Twumasi’s discharge.
The prosecution disclosed that Danso had been re-arrested and was currently in police custody in Kasoa. With Twumasi’s release, Danso will now stand trial independently.
Danso is accused of receiving $4,000 from Adinan Lamidi under the false pretense of securing a Canadian visa. Additionally, he allegedly took $2,000 from Marwan Mustapha for the same purpose but failed to deliver the promised service.
Both individuals were initially apprehended on September 15, 2024.
