Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has formally declared his exit from the ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing concerns for the safety of his supporters.
This decision comes in the wake of a violent incident involving the stabbing of a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who is associated with Unity Hall.
The injured individual, a participant in Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted by Agyapong’s team to perform at an event at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi.
According to Agyapong’s team, a wealthy associate of the former MP, who was present at the event, provided financial support to the Jama group. However, a group of robust, armed men—reportedly linked to the NPP—allegedly appeared and forcibly seized the money.
A confrontation ensued between the Jama group and the armed individuals, during which gunfire erupted. Amidst the turmoil, one member of the Jama group sustained a stab wound.
The victim was promptly transported to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Following the incident, Kennedy Agyapong and his team have filed an official report with the Kumasi Central Police Command.
In a media statement on Wednesday, Agyapong confirmed his withdrawal from the tour and expressed his commitment to seeking justice for the victim.
‘Due to the events of yesterday, my team and I have decided to withdraw as lives are at risk, and I do not believe I can adequately ensure the safety of my team. Therefore, we wish to step back to allow Dr. Bawumia to continue his campaign.’
