Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has conveyed profound sadness regarding the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, characterizing her as an extraordinary individual whose influence on women’s empowerment and national progress will be remembered for generations to come.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 23, 2025, the former President expressed that he and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, were “deeply saddened by the news of the untimely demise of the spouse of the late first President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, who holds the record as the longest-serving First Lady in our history and the Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement.”
He referred to Mrs. Rawlings as a “role model for women in Ghana and throughout Africa,” emphasizing that her advocacy for gender equality and empowerment initiatives has made a significant and lasting impact on the nation.
“Her dedication to advancing the women’s movement in Ghana and Africa will always be remembered. She was a kind and loving individual, possessing a delightful sense of humor, and was a wonderful companion,” he remarked.
The former President offered his condolences to the children and family of the late former First Lady, praying for their strength during this difficult time.
“Rebecca, my children, and I extend our heartfelt condolences to her children and family during this sorrowful time. May her soul find eternal peace in the embrace of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall reunite,” Akufo-Addo stated.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and spouse of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy for women’s rights, education, and social welfare throughout Ghana and Africa.
