A significant blackout that impacted large portions of the country on the evening of Thursday, April 3, has been completely resolved, as confirmed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) in an official statement.
The nationwide power outage disrupted electricity services in various locations, including Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and other northern regions of Ghana. This incident was caused by a fault on the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line at precisely 20:09 hours.
GRIDCo reported that the initial fault triggered a series of failures across nearby lines, leading to the shutdown of multiple power plants.
This abrupt decline in power generation resulted in extensive blackouts, particularly in areas beyond Kumasi.
“GRIDCo’s System Control Centre (SCC) responded immediately, implementing emergency protocols to stabilize the national grid,” the company stated. “Restoration efforts commenced promptly, and by 22:57 hours, full power was restored.”
GRIDCo also expressed its sincere apologies to the public for the disruption caused.
“The Ghana Grid Company extends its heartfelt apologies to the public for the inconvenience,” stated Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo.
