The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has allocated over GH¢101 million to senior high schools throughout Ghana to mitigate food shortages.
This initiative comes in response to concerns expressed by the Conference of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) regarding the scarcity of food in educational institutions across the country.
In light of these concerns, the President has instructed that food supplies originally designated for farmers impacted by drought in northern Ghana be redirected to schools to help alleviate the issue.
During a debate on the report concerning the second batch of ministerial nominees, the MP for Bawku Central reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing challenges within the education sector.
“The President, John Dramani Mahama, has already allocated over GH¢101 million to secondary schools to address the purchasing needs he mentioned. I can provide evidence of the transfer, demonstrating that His Excellency the President is actively addressing the issues in secondary education.
“He has instructed that food previously acquired for other purposes be distributed to schools due to the urgent needs of secondary education, specifically rice and maize.
“As a result, schools are not facing food shortages. They have sufficient supplies. Furthermore, in addition to distributing food to secondary schools, he has made direct financial transfers to these institutions to enable them to procure the necessary ingredients for student meals. We have commenced the implementation of these commitments.”
