President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who was Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, characterizing her life as one marked by exceptional dedication and service to the country.
In a message inscribed in the book of condolence, Mahama commended her 19 years in the role of First Lady, stating that Ghana takes pride in her accomplishments.
“Ghana is proud of your achievements during your 19 remarkable years as First Lady and mother of the nation. Although we are deeply saddened by your departure, we celebrate your life. It is disheartening that you left us just as we were preparing for the fifth anniversary and final funeral rites for our former president, your husband. You have fought valiantly and deserve a peaceful rest,” he wrote.
The announcement of Nana Konadu’s passing was made on Thursday, October 23, while she was undergoing treatment at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
She was highly regarded for her relentless advocacy for women’s empowerment, a cause she fervently supported throughout her tenure as First Lady.
During a condolence visit to the family in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, Mahama emphasized her contributions to women’s rights and national progress. He declared that she would receive a state burial, while the family retains the option to conduct traditional funeral rites afterward.
“She made women’s empowerment her priority. As you travel across the country, you can see the impact of her efforts. On behalf of the people of Ghana and the government, I extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the family,” Mahama stated. “We will collaborate closely with the family. Once the dates are confirmed, we will arrange a program, and the state will bestow upon her the full honors she rightfully deserves.”
The eldest child of the late First Lady, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, MP for Korle Klottey, expressed her appreciation to President Mahama for the support provided to the family during this difficult time.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has established a legacy characterized by service, advocacy, and dedication to the people of Ghana. Her life and contributions persist in inspiring countless generations of women and citizens across the nation.
