The High Court has retracted the bench warrant it previously issued for the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi.
This decision came after he appeared in court shortly after the warrant was issued.
The warrant, which was issued at approximately 9:40 a.m., remained in effect until Wontumi and his legal representatives arrived after 10 a.m. to request its withdrawal. It was officially revoked at 11:39 a.m.
When the case was brought back to the court’s attention, Chairman Wontumi’s attorney, Andy Appiah-Kubi, clarified that he had advised his client to be present at 10 a.m. under the belief that a case management conference was scheduled for that time.
While canceling the arrest order, the presiding judge admonished the NPP chairman to ensure punctuality in his future court appearances.
Chairman Wontumi is currently on trial with Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, as well as the company itself. They are facing allegations of unlawfully assigning mineral rights without proper authorization.
