The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasized the critical necessity to rejuvenate Ghana’s reading culture through intentional national investment in libraries at all educational levels.
During his address to the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 3, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu noted that the reading habits within the nation have significantly diminished, adversely impacting both learning outcomes and civic consciousness.
“The reading culture in Ghana requires enhancement,” he stated.
“When you travel abroad, particularly in the mornings, you will observe that nearly everyone is holding a newspaper, taking a moment to catch up on current events in their country. We must collectively assess the reading culture in Ghana.”
The Minister disclosed that issues regarding insufficient library facilities have been persistently highlighted during his regional tours.
“I visited Bono Ahafo, where the Omanhene expressed concerns regarding the Sunyani Regional Library. Similar issues were raised in Koforidua. Many schools lack adequate resources for their libraries,” he remarked.
Mr. Iddrisu declared that the Ministry of Education will soon introduce a motion in Parliament to guarantee that every school has access to a library facility.
He further mentioned that the government is also considering the introduction of digital libraries to foster reading and research among students.
“We must allocate more resources to libraries,” he asserted. “If we possess the means, we should contemplate establishing a digital library across all educational levels.”
