President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his administration’s commitment to reposition the Ghana Export–Import Bank (GEXIM), the nation’s primary policy and development bank, to play a pivotal role in transforming the agricultural sector.
This commitment was made during the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme” on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Techiman, located in the Bono East Region.
The initiative aims to significantly enhance the agricultural landscape by providing essential support to farmers, thereby increasing production and strengthening the country’s food security.
In his address, President Mahama emphasized the importance of innovative financing in agriculture, stating, “Access to financing is one of the major obstacles to agricultural investment. To tackle this issue, the Exim Bank will be reoriented to provide concessional loans to farmers and agricultural businesses, particularly those engaged in export and value addition. The Government plans to establish agro-processing zones equipped with irrigation, roads, electricity, and storage facilities to attract private investment and facilitate the processing of agricultural products.”
The “Feed Ghana Programme” is designed to enhance agricultural output to meet the needs of the population, supply raw materials for agro-processing industries, and generate employment opportunities for the youth.
The program encompasses various sub-projects focused on vegetables, grains, poultry, oil palm, tubers, and other import substitutes, aiming to decrease the nation’s dependence on imports and shift towards an export-oriented economy.
Following the launch, Hon. Sylvester Mensah, the Acting Chief Executive of GEXIM, spoke to the media, affirming the Bank’s readiness to support the “Feed Ghana Programme,” which aligns with its immediate goals of boosting food production, promoting agro-processing, and investing in projects that create significant job opportunities.
