President John Mahama has introduced initiatives aimed at addressing the nutritional challenges faced by senior high schools (SHSs) across the country.
He stated that food supplies, which were imported to mitigate the drought conditions anticipated in 2024, will be allocated to the various educational institutions.
President Mahama made these remarks during a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held in Accra on Sunday, January 12.
“This food was brought in by the previous administration in response to last year’s drought; however, in this urgent situation, we must utilize some of these supplies to ensure our students are fed and that their education continues,” he remarked.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that he has instructed the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, to coordinate with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to facilitate the removal of the food from the port for distribution.
“I have requested the Chief of Staff to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and retrieve food currently stored in warehouses in Tema,” he noted.
According to the president, this action reflects his dedication to enhancing the Free Senior High School program, which was established by the preceding government.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) had previously called on parents and guardians to support the feeding issues in SHSs by providing additional food for their children attending school.
