The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur (MP), convened a significant meeting with representatives from the World Bank Office in Accra to discuss collaborative approaches aimed at improving Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture industry.
The dialogue centered on essential development goals, such as job creation, the enhancement of coastal infrastructure, and the empowerment of women in coastal regions.
This visit by the Minister to the World Bank is part of a larger governmental effort to connect with international development partners and secure funding to promote sustainable growth in the sector.
Mr. Robert Taliercio, Divisional Director at the World Bank, welcomed the Minister and her team, reiterating the Bank’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s fisheries initiatives.
He expressed the World Bank’s willingness to collaboratively develop a unified development vision with the Ministry that corresponds with Ghana’s national development goals and the Bank’s operational priorities.
Mr. Taliercio praised Hon. Arthur for her efforts in rejuvenating the sector and pointed out the potential to access various trust funds aimed at fisheries and aquaculture projects. He suggested further technical discussions to refine project designs and ensure effective and impactful execution.
In her address, Emelia Arthur conveyed her gratitude for the ongoing collaboration and support from the World Bank. She highlighted that the Ministry is currently prioritizing the creation of decent and sustainable employment opportunities, especially for women and youth in coastal regions, as part of a holistic strategy for aquaculture development.
“The World Bank’s focus on job creation aligns closely with the Ministry’s new objectives,” Hon. Arthur remarked. “We are dedicated to fostering a more productive and resilient fisheries sector that offers genuine livelihood opportunities while ensuring sustainability in the long run.”
The Minister also recognized the significant contributions of international partners like Bloomberg and Oceana, who are aiding in data collection to support evidence-based policymaking and project development.
She emphasized the necessity for enhanced investment and technical assistance to realize the untapped potential of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
This engagement represents a crucial advancement in strengthening the partnership between the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the World Bank, further solidifying the government’s dedication to promoting inclusive development and environmental stewardship along Ghana’s coastlines.
