The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated the Governing Council of the University for Development Studies (UDS), encouraging its members to focus on maintaining the university’s integrity and distinct identity.
The council is led by Mr. Abdulai Salifu, a former diplomat, with Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, acting as Vice-Chairman.
Additional members include Dr. Fatimatu Iddrisu, Dr. Arnold Abubakari Mashud, Madam Magdalene Awunyeliya, Professor Edmund Muonir Der, Dr. Yaa Nyarko, Professor Mamudu Abunga Akudugu, Mrs. Bruce Akambotuu, Mr. Mohammed Abdulai, and Professor Terry Ansah, who represents the UDS Alumni Association.
Other members are Mr. Emmanuel Asampana, Mr. Alhassan Issah Dokurugu, and Mrs. Abiba Nyar. The inauguration ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Prof. Ahmed Jinapor, the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission; Queen Nozizwe Pearl Mulela, the spouse of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini of the Zulu Nation in South Africa; along with various members of the UDS community.
Mr. Iddrisu administered the Official Oath and the Oath of Secrecy to the Council Members, encouraging them to assist the Vice-Chancellor in promoting effective governance and academic excellence.
He stated that the inauguration demonstrated the government’s complete trust in the Council’s integrity and capability to advocate for the University’s best interests, emphasizing, ‘You have a duty to safeguard the identity and integrity of UDS.’
The Education Minister praised the outgoing Council members for their devoted service and urged the new members to build on that foundation by establishing higher standards for institutional advancement.
He assured them of the government’s unwavering support and promised non-interference in their decision-making processes.
Mr. Salifu, the newly appointed Council Chairman, expressed his appreciation to President John Mahama for the trust placed in them and reaffirmed the Council’s dedication to furthering the University’s mission and objectives.
