The Ministry of Education has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to ensure accountability from public universities concerning the use of their internally generated funds (IGFs).
The Ministry has indicated a pressing need to evaluate how these funds are enhancing access to quality education and the advancement of educational infrastructure.
During the inauguration of the Dr. Paul Effah Conference Hall for the Ghana Tertiary Education sector on Tuesday, June 3, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu highlighted that while the government continues to provide support to public universities, it is equally important for these institutions to exhibit responsible management of their own generated revenues.
“We must focus on how universities are utilizing their IGF and the benefits it brings in terms of increasing access to quality higher education, especially in the areas of residential facilities and, crucially, lecture theatres.”
The Minister also assigned the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) the task of creating a detailed plan for establishing polytechnics in every region.
He stressed that these regional polytechnics will function as transitional institutions, providing students with practical skills necessary for the job market.
“…Do you not agree that an additional layer would be to establish a polytechnic in each region of Ghana to bridge the gap between senior high school and university? What measures can we take to enhance industry connections?
“Therefore, your council may wish to consider this and present a plan to the president, as it is a feasible initiative to broaden access to higher education. The government will consider the possibility of having a polytechnic in each of the 16 regions of Ghana to enhance and increase access to higher education while still prioritizing employability and industry relevance.
