The Bank of Ghana will launch a year-long celebration to mark 60 years of the cedi, recognized as a lasting symbol of the nation’s economic independence.
The official inauguration of the Cedi@60 celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre, under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
President John Dramani Mahama will be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.
Since its introduction on July 19, 1965, the cedi has experienced numerous reforms and redesigns, mirroring Ghana’s economic journey and resilience over six decades of national development.
The Bank of Ghana states that the Cedi@60 milestone serves not only as a reflection on history but also as a chance to restore public confidence in the national currency, which is a cornerstone of stability and identity.
As part of the festivities, the central bank will initiate regional roadshows, public education initiatives on clean note handling and currency security, as well as youth competitions in art, music, and essays to enhance public appreciation of the cedi’s legacy.
A significant highlight of the program will be a Currency Conference, which will convene leading experts from global central banks, academia, and the private sector to discuss Ghana’s monetary evolution and outline the future of its financial system.
The Bank of Ghana asserts that the commemoration will lead to increased public awareness and a collective commitment to preserving the integrity of the cedi for future generations.
