The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent incidents of hooliganism, vandalism, and assaults directed at state officials and properties that have occurred following the general elections on December 7, 2024.
Reports of these disturbances have emerged nationwide since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on January 7, 2025.
In a statement released on January 14, CDD-Ghana expressed alarm over the persistent trend of post-election violence, which has become a concerning aspect of Ghana’s political landscape. The Center warned that if such actions are not addressed, they could jeopardize the nation’s efforts to reduce winner-take-all politics and pose a threat to the peace and stability of the Republic.
In light of these events, CDD-Ghana has urged law enforcement agencies to enforce Ghanaian laws rigorously to combat this alarming trend.

Furthermore, the Center called upon the newly inaugurated government of President John Dramani Mahama to convey a decisive message that post-election violence will not be tolerated.
The government must ensure that the Ghana Police Service and other law enforcement bodies are empowered to act lawfully against individuals involved in recent or ongoing acts of hooliganism and vandalism.
CDD-Ghana acknowledged the effectiveness of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act (2019) in addressing politically motivated vigilante groups and suggested that similar stringent penalties be imposed on post-election partisan hooliganism. The Center also recommended that future Transition Teams prioritize the management and prevention of post-election violence as a vital aspect of the transition process.
The Center praised the orderly conduct of the December 7, 2024 general elections, highlighting the significant progress Ghana has made in its democratization efforts since 1992. CDD-Ghana called for ongoing initiatives to ensure that elections and their aftermath remain free from violence and threats to life, safety, and property.
