The government is poised to make a significant decision regarding constitutional review proposals as President John Dramani Mahama leads a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to evaluate recommendations put forth by the review committee.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced this development, clarifying that a draft position paper has already been prepared following a thorough review by the Attorney General and the President’s legal team.
He mentioned that the President had previously instructed that the report be examined in detail to inform the government’s response to the proposals arising from the constitutional review process.
According to him, this task has now been finalized, and the Cabinet will convene to establish a definitive stance on the recommendations.
“Thus, on Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session presided over by the President himself to review the draft position paper,” he stated on Joy News.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu elaborated that the meeting’s results will dictate the government’s official response to the various proposals under consideration.
He further noted that the approved document will subsequently be made available to the public to clarify the government’s stance.
He emphasized that, in contrast to a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review committee does not necessitate a white paper but rather a position paper from the government.
He also clarified that the Cabinet’s meeting will primarily concentrate on the constitutional review report, although additional matters may also be addressed.
According to him, once the Cabinet endorses the document, the government will proceed to the next phase of implementation, which includes establishing an implementation committee.
He added that the proposals will be evaluated individually, with some anticipated to be accepted, others modified, and some rejected based on feasibility and other factors.
He concluded by stating that the government will further engage the public once the Cabinet has completed its discussions.
