Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has called for the collaboration of all parties involved to attain enduring peace in the ongoing Bawku conflict.
The tensions between the Kusasis and Mamprusis have escalated recently, leading to numerous casualties. Currently, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is spearheading a mediation initiative to address the deadlock.
During the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national ”Thank You Tour” in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed profound sadness regarding the persistent violence.
He characterized the conflict as one between “two factions who share a common history and culture,” and urged for an immediate ceasefire. He lamented, “I am deeply saddened by this conflict and the loss of innocent lives.
The Mamprusis and Kusasis are one community, and such occurrences should not take place. We communicate in the same language, we have intermarried—we are united.”
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity of supporting the Asantehene-led mediation, highlighting the significance of unity and dialogue. He also denounced the politicization of the crisis, accusing certain individuals of taking advantage of the situation for personal political gain.
“The politicization of the Bawku crisis is regrettable. Some individuals pursue their narrow interests rather than the peace and stability of the region,” he remarked.
He cautioned politicians against leveraging chieftaincy matters for political benefit, stating, “The NDC has engaged in this practice, which is disingenuous—it is a burden they must bear.”
He expressed optimism that the mediation efforts would be fruitful in restoring peace, stating, “I hope the mediation team led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will succeed in bringing the essential peace to Bawku.
I implore all factions and stakeholders to fully cooperate with the team.
