Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has criticized the politicization of the ongoing crisis in Bawku, located in the Upper East Region.
During the NPP’s national Thank You Tour on Tuesday in the Western North Region, he expressed concern that the recent escalation of conflict has been exploited by certain politicians for their selfish agendas, undermining peace in the area, which he deemed ‘unfortunate.’
He stated, ‘The politicization of the crisis in Bawku is regrettable, as it serves the narrow interests of a few rather than the stability of the region.’
Dr. Bawumia recounted how some individuals falsely accused him of inciting violence by claiming he was supplying weapons to one faction against another, which he found deeply distressing. He also indicated that even some within the NPP had fallen prey to such misinformation.
He asserted that over time, the NDC, which he accused of propagating these falsehoods, has been revealed for their deceit.
‘The situation in Bawku has shown that the NDC misled the populace for political gain, and now the truth is evident to all,’ he remarked.
He emphasized the importance of unity in achieving lasting peace in Bawku and urged politicians to avoid leveraging the crisis and related chieftaincy matters for political advantage.
‘As politicians, we must exercise caution in politicizing chieftaincy issues.
The NDC has done so, and it has backfired on them. I desire peace in Bawku more than anyone else, and I hope the mediation efforts led by Otumfuo will succeed in restoring peace to the region.’
