The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has denied persistent allegations that the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, cast her vote in favor of him during the election that resulted in his appointment as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin was appointed as Speaker in January 2021 following a tumultuous and disorderly voting process, during which it was claimed that one New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP had crossed party lines to endorse his candidacy.
This situation ignited internal disputes within the NPP, with Adwoa Safo being widely implicated as the purported defector.
Nevertheless, during a visit from the family of Apostle Kwadwo Safo to his office on Monday, October 13, Mr. Bagbin rejected the rumors.
He publicly exonerated the former lawmaker of any allegations of misconduct.
“I refer to her as my daughter because when I first entered Parliament, she was quite young. Thus, I began calling her my daughter even before she ventured into politics and joined Parliament. However, we are from different political backgrounds,” Mr. Bagbin clarified.
He further stated that his enduring personal connection with Adwoa Safo may have contributed to the confusion.
“Due to our relationship as daughter and father and the affection we share, there was a belief that she supported my candidacy for Speaker,” he remarked.
