The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama, has announced that he resigned from the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) approximately five months prior.
Dr Asiama has stated that he no longer participates in GoldBod Board meetings. He made this statement in response to concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding his Board membership and the potential for conflicts of interest arising from his dual positions.
These concerns were articulated by former Finance Minister and Karaka Member of Parliament, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, during an NPP press briefing on September 1.
The concerns centered on the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, specifically addressing the Bank’s role in financing gold acquisitions and documented losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme. During the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Dr Asiama addressed a journalist’s question and confirmed his resignation.
“I stepped down from the GoldBod Board approximately five months ago. I do not attend any GoldBod board meetings,” he stated. He further clarified that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) does not mandate the Governor to serve on the Board personally.
According to his explanation, the legislation permits the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or by any other official holding the rank of director or above.
“The legislation governing GoldBod activities contains a provision allowing the Bank of Ghana to be represented by either the Governor or any other official at the director level or higher,” he explained.
“The Governor’s personal presence is not necessarily required,” he concluded.
