The Ashaiman District Court has placed a 43-year-old soldier, WOII Dzisenu Ben, in police custody following allegations of the murder of 45-year-old Abdul Shaban at Mawugbedzibe, located near Afienya.
WOII Dzisenu, who faces charges of murder under Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), did not enter a plea during the proceedings.
The court, overseen by Derick Parden Eshun, has scheduled his next appearance for August 27, 2026.
Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, representing the prosecution, informed the court that on August 23, 2025, WOII Dzisenu and WOI Yamoah Mark, both affiliated with the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) at Michel Camp, visited the Afienya Police Station to report an incident that occurred at Mawugbedzibe.
The prosecution stated that the two soldiers reported that while on their property at Mawugbedzibe, an unidentified individual attacked WOII Dzisenu and attempted to seize his M16 rifle, which led the soldier to discharge his weapon.
Following the report, police accompanied the two soldiers to the scene, where they discovered Shaban’s lifeless body on the ground.
The prosecution noted that the deceased appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest, near the neck area.
After being declared dead, his body was transported to the mortuary of the Tema General Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The prosecution further indicated that the rifle, marked as No. 000470-11, along with its magazine and ammunition, was confiscated for investigative purposes.
A post-mortem examination conducted by Dr. Eric Dumfeh, a pathologist at the Tema General Hospital, determined that the cause of death was a perforating gunshot wound to the heart.
The prosecution also mentioned that a bullet extracted from the deceased’s body was later sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis.
The pathologist’s report suggested that the characteristics of the wound were consistent with a near-contact, angled gunshot wound, indicating that the shooter was positioned at a higher elevation than the victim.
The court was informed that both the accused and WOI Yamoah Mark later provided written caution statements regarding the investigation, witnessed by an independent party.
Inspector Nartey indicated that the case file was then duplicated and sent to the Attorney-General’s Office for guidance.
In accordance with the advice from the Attorney-General, the police officially charged WOII Dzisenu with murder and brought him before the Ashaiman District Court.
The court then ordered that WOII Dzisenu be remanded in police custody, with a scheduled appearance set for August 27, 2026.
