Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated his willingness to fully cooperate with any investigative authority that aims to examine the extortion allegations made against him.
The Minority Leader made this declaration while addressing Parliament on Monday, August 24, in response to accusations brought forth by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
Afenyo-Markin has refuted the allegations and has initiated legal proceedings against the GoldBod CEO, who has accused him of extortion.
The Effutu MP indicated that his choice to pursue legal action is part of his commitment to safeguarding his reputation and allowing the proper legal channels to ascertain the truth of the situation.
He emphasized that he has opted for what he refers to as the “high moral ground” by submitting himself to legal processes instead of engaging in a public dispute regarding the allegations.
“I have chosen to take the high moral ground by submitting myself to the processes of the law. I have therefore caused writs to be filed at the Achimota Circuit Court. I am confident that, in due course, the court will reach an appropriate conclusion on these matters.
“I also eagerly await the moment when the individual or individuals who made the allegations will have the courage to report the issue to the police, the OSP, or any investigative agency in this country. I expect that if they find the courage to report that I have extorted from them and I am summoned, I will fully cooperate with every investigation to ensure that my name is ultimately cleared.”
Mr. Afenyo-Markin reiterated that he has no reason to fear any investigation into the allegations and expressed his readiness to appear before the relevant state institutions should a formal complaint be filed against him.
