The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the government intends to sponsor approximately 800 supporters to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He stated that the estimated cost per supporter is $9,250, which will cover airfare, accommodation, and local transportation for the duration of the tournament.
In an interview conducted on Monday, March 30, Mr. Adams elaborated that the significant expense has led to the decision to limit the number of supporters.
“The cost is considerably high, so we are considering not exceeding 800. The Supporters’ Union has many members; we cannot accommodate everyone. If we manage to send this number, our calculations indicate that even at the group stage, it will cost about $9,250 per person. We will cover their airfare, lodging, and transportation,” he stated.
Nevertheless, the Minister emphasized that the beneficiaries will need to cover their own visa and meal expenses.
“They are responsible for their visa fees, which should be their contribution, as well as their meal costs,” he added.
Mr. Adams also disclosed that the ministry has turned down requests from individuals seeking contracts to provide meals for the supporters during the tournament.
“Many individuals have approached the ministry in search of a catering contract, but I informed them that we are not pursuing that option,” he revealed.
