Tensions are escalating between the students of the College of Community Health Nursing and the Dean of Students at Nkanchina, located in the Kpandai District of the Northern Region.
This unrest stems from an incident where a student reported a missing phone to the Dean, Isaaka Godwin. In response, the Dean allegedly gathered the entire student body and mandated that each student pay a levy of twenty cedis to cover the cost of the phone.
Students have expressed that they requested a reduction in the amount, but the Dean reportedly refused, insisting that every student must pay or face consequences.
The students argue that the twenty-cedi levy poses a financial strain for many who are unable to afford it. On Friday afternoon, the Dean allegedly instructed students to halt academic activities and undergo punishment for their refusal to pay the levy, asserting that they must still complete the punishment and pay the fee afterwards.
In an interview with Channel One News, several students, who wished to remain anonymous, urged authorities to step in.
One student remarked, “He’s attempting to infringe upon our rights as a student body and also the SRC board. We implored him to at least lower the amount we are required to pay. He stated that he would never, ever do that.”
Another student added, “We were asking just to reduce the amount for us, so we could contribute and reach the total needed. If the amount cannot be lowered, I will not be able to afford it.”
When Channel One News reached out to the Dean of Students, he declined to provide a comment, indicating that the proper channels should be utilised. Attempts to contact the principal of the college were unsuccessful, as calls to him went unanswered.
