Finance Minister and Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has honored the memory of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, characterizing him as a devoted and altruistic leader dedicated to enhancing the Ghana Armed Forces.
During the inaugural annual public lecture commemorating Dr. Omane Boamah on Tuesday, August 4, Dr. Ato Forson remarked that the late minister was a proponent of reforms designed to cultivate a modern and professional military while emphasizing the well-being of service members.
“He served Ghana with unwavering conviction. He fortified our institutions. He was a proponent of leadership rooted in service and the national interest. As the Minister for Defence, he endeavored to develop a modern, professional, and capable Ghana Armed Forces. He prioritized and placed significant emphasis on the welfare of our service personnel,” he stated.
He also mentioned that the annual lecture series aims to uphold the late minister’s principles, while motivating future generations to serve with integrity.
Omane Boamah was one of eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in a Ghana Air Force helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The Z-9EH helicopter accident occurred while the aircraft was en route to the Ashanti Region, leading to the fatalities of several high-ranking public officials and military personnel.
Among those who perished in the crash were the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; and National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Samuel Aboagye.
Also among the deceased were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah of the Ghana Air Force.
The annual lecture was organized as part of initiatives to honor Dr. Omane Boamah’s legacy and to emphasize the principles and ideals that guided his public service and dedication to Ghana.
