The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has declared a cash award of GHC 50,000 for Naomi Oyo Ohene-Oti, a Ghanaian oncology nurse who has recently been honored with the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.
Madam Ohene-Oti, who has gained international recognition for her exceptional contributions to cancer care, presented her award to the Ministry of Health in Accra.
On behalf of the government and the citizens of Ghana, Mr. Akandoh congratulated her on August 26, 2026, stating that her accomplishment is a source of national pride and exemplifies the dedication, compassion, and professional excellence of Ghanaian nurses.
“This is not merely your personal success but also a reflection of the diligent efforts of nurses throughout the nation who fulfill critical roles, often in underserved areas where medical doctors may be unavailable,” the Minister remarked.
He reiterated that nurses are the foundation of healthcare delivery in Ghana and detailed ongoing government initiatives aimed at enhancing their welfare. These initiatives include nearly halving nursing training school fees compared to the previous year, the continued provision of trainee allowances, and plans to elevate certain training institutions to degree-awarding status.
Addressing Mrs. Ohene-Oti, the Minister praised her for elevating Ghana’s reputation on the global platform. “Your success is a success for Ghana. Today, we take pride in you, and this support package comes not only from me but also from the Ministry of Health and the people of Ghana who are behind you,” he stated.
Hon. Akandoh expressed his belief that her recognition would motivate other healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, to pursue excellence on an international level.
He additionally urged for enhanced cooperation among the public, regulatory bodies, labor unions, and health education institutions to develop a more robust health system. “Wisdom does not reside solely in one individual’s mind. Collectively, we can transform Ghana’s healthcare system into one of the finest in the continent,” he emphasized.
The Minister committed that the government will continue to acknowledge and support health professionals whose efforts improve healthcare delivery and positively represent Ghana on the global stage.
