The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as Chairman Wontumi, has retracted his motion contesting the terms of his bail.
The motion, which was submitted to the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, was set to be heard on Tuesday, June 3.
Nevertheless, his legal representatives officially withdrew the application on Monday, June 2, before the scheduled hearing.
Chairman Wontumi had requested a reassessment of the GH¢50 million bail set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), contending through his attorneys that the sum was excessive and could hinder his release.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP has been detained by the EOCO since May 27, 2025, for alleged participation in various criminal activities, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that a subsequent phase of the investigation allegedly connects Wontumi to a broader international organized crime syndicate.
