The Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has advocated for the establishment of a specialized Consular Fund aimed at supporting Ghanaian deportees who are experiencing challenging situations overseas. During his vetting session with Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the necessity of a financial framework that would empower foreign missions to offer legal and humanitarian assistance to Ghanaians at risk of deportation.
He highlighted that the Fund would be an essential asset for embassies and consulates globally, ensuring that no Ghanaian is left without representation or aid in times of crisis.
Mr. Ablakwa expressed particular alarm regarding the recent mass deportations conducted by the United States.
He pointed out that many individuals affected by these actions often endure humiliating treatment and lack access to legal representation or consular support.
“Upon receiving approval, I will prioritize the establishment of a Consular Fund. It is imperative that this Fund is created and made available to our foreign service personnel to provide assistance, especially during this period of announced mass deportations by the United States.”
He further asserted that deportees have the right to consular assistance and legal representation to avert violations of their rights and dignity.
In addition to addressing deportation issues, Mr. Ablakwa indicated that his ministry would collaborate with key international partners to negotiate enhanced migration policies that protect the interests of Ghanaians abroad.
“Individuals who may be apprehended for deportation are entitled to consular support. We must ensure they receive legal assistance to prevent their rights from being violated during the deportation process. Such violations are an infringement on their human rights and a disrespect to their dignity, and these are issues I am committed to addressing.”
