The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is pleased with the directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that no firearms, including those carried by security personnel, will be allowed at polling stations during the 2024 general elections.
As the Commander-in-Chief of the elections security task force, the IGP will have exclusive authority to approve any military intervention, which will be viewed as a final option.
Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, restated the party’s dedication to collaborating with security agencies during a police briefing with representatives from all political parties regarding security preparations for the upcoming elections.
He continued by saying that the NDC expects to receive substantial assistance from security personnel during the special voting on December 2.
The security agencies have made it clear that firearms are not allowed at polling stations, and we are pleased to hear this. We are pleased to hear that the military will be used as a last resort in ensuring election security. The Inspector General of Police, who heads the elections security taskforce, is the only one authorized to order military intervention.
I want to stress the importance of this fact: the IGP is the Commander-in-Chief of the elections security taskforce. Only he has the authority to approve military intervention during the elections. This places the responsibility for any military action solely on the IGP, and no one else.
