The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, has praised the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, along with the Ghana Police Service for their crucial involvement in the ongoing national initiative to tackle illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
During his address at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, 2025, the Minister emphasized that the IGP, the Ghana Police Service, and various security agencies have played a significant role in curbing the activities of illegal miners and protecting water resources.
In recent months, the Police Service has escalated operations throughout the nation.
In Samreboi and surrounding areas, a specialized Anti-Galamsey Taskforce established by the IGP has successfully seized over 100 excavators, bulldozers, firearms, and Chanfang machines utilized for illegal mining activities.
Numerous arrests have been executed, with the suspects currently undergoing legal proceedings.
Comparable enforcement measures have been implemented in the Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, and Upper West regions, strengthening the Police Service’s comprehensive strategy to eradicate illegal mining.
The Police have reiterated their dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to maintain the momentum of the anti-galamsey initiative, thereby ensuring the enduring protection of Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies.
