The New Patriotic Party (NPP) standard-bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that the party has initiated a comprehensive nationwide initiative to identify parliamentary candidates deemed capable of securing electoral victories in the 2028 general elections.
He explained that this undertaking will encompass constituencies throughout the nation and is designed to augment the party’s internal parliamentary primary process by identifying candidates with strong prospects of success in the general election.
These remarks come after the NPP’s national executive elections, which resulted in the appointment of new national leadership.
During discussions with party executives on Sunday, October 4, Dr Bawumia said the NPP also intends to hold its parliamentary primaries at the earliest opportunity to complete its internal electoral procedures.
He emphasized that the party is committed to ensuring the candidate-selection process maintains transparency and prevents financial resources from becoming the predominant criterion in determining parliamentary candidacy.
“We are committed to making this process as transparent as feasible. Regarding parliamentary candidates, our objective is to conduct candidate selection across all constituencies because certain individuals may prevail in parliamentary primaries despite possessing substantial financial resources, yet they may be unable to secure victory in the general election,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia cautioned that a candidate’s success in an internal primary could prove detrimental if that individual lacks the requisite support necessary to achieve victory in the subsequent general election.
“Should they succeed in winning the primary, but the seat has already been forfeited from the outset,” he remarked.
He revealed that the NPP intends to commission multiple independent evaluations of prospective candidates and analyze the comparative findings prior to finalizing its selections.
“The candidate identification process is currently underway, and we will obtain more than one candidate assessment from independent organizations, and we will evaluate their respective conclusions,” he explained.
Dr Bawumia further noted that in instances where the evaluations identify a candidate assessed as possessing the capability to achieve electoral success, the party would solicit that individual’s participation in the contest.
“Should we determine that this individual possesses the capability to achieve victory, as is evident, we shall endeavor to secure their participation,” he stated.
