Eight travellers died in a tragic incident when armed gunmen blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, and started shooting.
On Sunday, the armed men established roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, halting vehicles to single out potential targets.
Passengers who were trapped in the blockade were questioned about their identities. Unfortunately, in the tragic event, around eight individuals lost their lives, and two vehicles were set on fire, leading to heightened security worries.
A survivor described the frightening experience: “I was on my way from Sunyani to Paga. Upon arriving in Walewale, roadblocks had been set up by the community, with people actively searching for individuals to harm. The incident went on for over an hour, but security failed to take action.
The ongoing Bawku Conflict is thought to be the reason behind the attack, as tensions have reignited following a period of calm.
The Ghana Police Service has promised to have more security along the highway in the upcoming days to ensure the safety of travellers.
