A student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School is seeking justice after being violently assaulted during a district inter-schools athletics competition held in Agona Swedru, located in the Central Region.
The individual, known as Fiadzigbe, sustained a broken tooth along with several facial injuries after reportedly being struck with stones and attacked during the event.
A video that has circulated widely depicts the student being assaulted as chaos ensues, prompting other students to flee the area.
In recounting his experience, Fiadzigbe asserted that he did not provoke the attack in any way.
“They hurled a stone at me while I was searching for a place to sit in order to apply medicine to my eye. I did nothing wrong. I was merely standing there,” he stated.
He further elaborated that the violence erupted abruptly and without any forewarning.
“When I turned around, I noticed my peers running, but I was unaware of what was occurring. By the time I comprehended the situation, the stones had already struck me,” he continued.
The assault was reportedly executed by students from the Swedru School of Business during the competition.
The Ghana Police Service has since apprehended three students in relation to the incident, and investigations are currently underway.
In separate statements, both the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education have denounced the violence, labeling it as intolerable and against the principles of sportsmanship. Both organizations have urged that those accountable should face the full extent of the law.
In the aftermath of the incident, all ongoing sporting events in the Central Region have been suspended while a thorough review and the establishment of enhanced security measures are conducted.
