The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is scheduled to conduct a demolition operation today, Thursday, April 10, 2025, aimed at removing illegally constructed buildings on the Weija and Dansoman Ramsar sites.
This initiative follows a recent visit by President John Dramani Mahama to Ramsar sites and flood-prone regions in Accra, during which he issued a strong warning regarding the removal of structures situated on protected lands and waterways.
While addressing attendees at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, President Mahama voiced his concerns about the rising issue of land encroachment and its role in exacerbating flooding and property damage.
He urged against unlawful construction on waterways and Ramsar sites, emphasizing the government’s commitment to taking firm measures.
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, is anticipated to lead a contingent of security personnel to supervise the demolition efforts.
This initiative aims to eliminate unauthorized constructions, restore natural water pathways, and mitigate the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
