Former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak has expressed his disapproval of Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, regarding his decision to present a dollar gift to evangelist Patricia Asiedua, commonly known as Agradaa.
Mr. Mubarak cautioned that such actions could potentially destabilize the local currency and erode economic confidence.
In a Facebook post, he contended that this action is unjustifiable, as it conveys a detrimental message about the strength of the cedi, despite its recent gains.
He urged public officials to exhibit trust in Ghana’s currency and refrain from foreign exchange giveaways that may weaken the economy.
He stated, ‘It is indefensible for a public officeholder to distribute foreign currency, particularly when the cedi is performing well. Distributing foreign currency, regardless of its source, could jeopardize the local currency and the economy.
We are already facing challenges with schools, hotels, and property owners demanding payment in USD.
Sammy Gyamfi’s misjudgment may be interpreted as a lack of faith in the cedi, contradicting government regulations. Such actions could adversely affect the value or stability of the cedi.’
Additionally, Ras Mubarak recommended that the Ghana Revenue Authority ensure Agradaa is taxed on the gift.
In the meantime, following a viral video showcasing the cash gift, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has summoned Mr. Gyamfi to provide clarification regarding the circumstances of this controversial act.
