Thursday, April 24, 2025, there was notable frustration and confusion at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) as patients who had arrived early for medical care found the consulting rooms unoccupied.
Doctors at TTH had suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely on April 23, citing ‘unwarranted attacks’ from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.
This decision was reached during an emergency general assembly meeting of the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).
The announcement followed a statement from the group that condemned an incident during the minister’s visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on Tuesday, April 22.
The Association declared, ‘All members of DATTH have proceeded on an indefinite suspension of all emergency and outpatient services (General OPD, Antenatal clinic, Specialist clinic, Paediatrics OPD).’
A visit on Thursday, April 24, revealed scenes of patients queuing in the emergency and outpatient departments, with no doctors or medical staff present.
